This was my first venture into graphic novels. I wasn't sure how I would like them, but I'm glad I read these books. I'm not sure I could have read a book about this subject matter in another form.
I'm glad you enjoyed them Lisa! This was one of the first graphic novels I ever read and I found it profoundly moving. I hope this will lead you to check out some others. Marjane Satrapi's work is very good too and in a similar vein.
I read Maus last year and loved it. It and Watchmen, highly recommended, are my favourite graphic novels. It is an amazing story. The way the past weaves in with the present is great for showing the later effects of the Holocaust along side the horror of the time. I also loved how the father son relationship was shown so truthfully, there was no hiding any flaws.
From what I've read of people's reviews of Maus I'm glad people are giving graphic novels a chance. I've personally never really treated them all that differently from novels. They're just stories told in a different way.
Like Lisa this was my first foray into this story form and I was impressed by the power of these books. Definitely MUST READS! Thanks to this challenge, I ended up reading books I never would have thought to pick up.
